The Udu Local Government Council has sounded a strong warning to property owners and developers encroaching on waterways, drainage channels, high-tension electricity corridors and government rights of way, declaring that such structures will face enforcement action.
The Executive Committee (EXCO) of the council reached the resolution on Monday 5 October 2026, during a meeting chaired by the Executive Chairman, Olorogun (Hon.) Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode, JP, FCIA.
The decision came against the backdrop of recurring flooding in several parts of Udu, with the council expressing concern over the growing practice of constructing buildings and other structures on natural water channels and drainage routes.
The council said the continued blockage of waterways prevents stormwater from flowing freely and creates artificial bottlenecks that aggravate flooding during heavy rainfall.
Beyond the flooding concerns, the EXCO warned that buildings located beneath high-tension electricity lines expose occupants and members of the public to serious electrical hazards.
It also stressed that encroachment on government rights of way could obstruct future road expansion, drainage construction, public utilities and other infrastructure projects.
Following the deliberations, the EXCO resolved to step up enforcement of physical planning regulations and remove structures found to be in violation of relevant laws and approved planning requirements.
Security agencies within the local government area have also been alerted to the decision and are expected to provide support during enforcement operations.
The council urged residents and property developers to desist immediately from further construction on waterways, drainage channels, high-tension corridors and government rights of way.
The administration maintained that the enforcement drive is not merely about demolition, but about protecting lives, preserving drainage infrastructure and ensuring that future development in Udu follows proper planning standards.
The council reaffirmed its determination to tackle environmental challenges and reduce the vulnerability of communities to flooding, while promoting safer and more sustainable physical development across Udu.
